Centre for Chemical Biology is one of the Centre of Excellence in USM which provides high-end facilities and equipments for campus community to carry out their research. At CCB, we have a Biolog Omnilog GEN III Plus Automated Microbial Identification System. This system is for the identification of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi (with Microbial Community/Population Studies) and Combo Phenotype MicroArrays (PM) System for phenotype assays with microbial cells and mammalian cells.
At this stage, CCB would be offering Microbial Identification as a service for USM researchers as well as to other public/private universities. This is a complete system which comprises of OmniLog GEN III Operation Software (OS), OmniLog GEN III Phenotype MicroArray (PM) System Operation Software, OmniLog Incubator/Reader Unit, MicroStation Reader Unit, Biolog Turbidimeter, GEN III ID Database and Data Management System Workstation. The Biolog GEN III Microplate Provides a standardized micromethod using 94 biochemical tests (71 carbon source utilization assays and 23 chemical sensitivity assays) to profile and identify a broad range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The test panel provides “Phenotypic Fingerprint” of the microorganism which can be used to identify it at the species level. Biolog MicroLog Database can identify 1044 aerobic bacteria species, 361 anaerobic bacteria species, 267 yeast species and 619 filamentous fungi species.
