What It Is About

     Chemical biology combines the scientific thoughts and advances of chemistry, biology and allied disciplines to understand and manipulate biological systems with molecular precision. Many of the present day biological problems demand molecular and quantitative solutions that can be supplied by tools and approaches derived from chemistry that target various systems of interest such as proteomics, synthetic biology, employing biology, molecular sensing, and glycobiology among others.

      Researchers in our group currently focus on two major groups of organism, insects and microbes. Dr. Veera Singham and his team focuses on understanding underlying molecular mechanisms of insecticide resistance in pest insects and also to elucidate chemicals that regulate or influence behaviours or biological responses in insects. Dr. Eng Su Anne scope focuses on the discovery and characterization of novel anti-infectives that target bacterial virulence or alternatively, improve host immunity by utilizing C. elegans – Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 model. Our group also made collaborative effort with Prof. Ahmad Sofiman Othman to investigate transcription factors associated to secondary laticifer differentiation in the para rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis.
